With diverse influences such as Sheryl Crow, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Lucinda Williams, Radney Foster, Kim Ritchie and Alanis Morrisette, Brooke is developing her own signature sound. Neither purely pop, nor traditional country, but fully embracing elements of both, Brooke Leal is at the forefront of the next generation of female singer-songwriters.
Brooke began performing at the age of 2. Her family vividly remember having to pay the 20 cent cover charge for 'special' concerts, put on by Brooke, in the family's living room. It wasn't until she was 10 and 5 ft 7 that she chose a career as a singer, over a dancer. No matter how good a dancer Brooke could be, she was always put in the back row because of her towering height. The only way she saw possible to make it to the front and be noticed was by taking hold of the mic. Now, a 6ft tall, woman in her twenties, with two successful independent E.P.'s, her debut single on the 'Danny Deckchair' soundtrack, Brooke has the world at her feet and hasn't looked back.
Brooke's supportive family have travelled all over the country side so that she could follow the music festival circuit. During her schooling Brooke attended monthly workshops in Sydney as part of the prestigious "Talent Development Project". After Graduating from TDP in 1996, Brooke went over to Taiwan for 6 months performing at LeoFoo Village in a 'Wild West' show & as part of a bluegrass band. Brooke spent three months in Japan, performing at a five-star hotel where she had to sing in Japanese! She has appeared on stage with such major Aussie stars as Slim Dusty, Ted Egan, Johnny Young, Brian Young and the legendary Rolf Harris. Brooke has also appeared in major productions like Starstruck and the Coca-Cola Hats Off To Australia spectacular.
Brooke's rack of awards include the 1996 CCMA Female Vocalist Award, the 1997 Dead Ringer Band Achievement Award, Star Maker Grand Finalist in 1998, The 'National Year of The Outback' Song writing Award 2001, Mildura Independent Country Music Rising Star Award Winner 2002, 1233 ABC Newcastle Music Award Winner (Country) 2002.
Brooke's years of performing experience have allowed her to concentrate more on her songwriting. During a writing trip to Nashville, Brooke performed at many of Music City's top venues, including the Bluebird Cafe, the Broken Spoke, the Douglas Corner and the Boardwalk Cafe, and played with the likes of the Osborne Brothers and Rod McCurey.
Brooke speaks highly of her experience in Nashville, planning a follow up trip in July 2008.
You can catch Brooke playing around Melbourne, where she is performing, writing and adding to her ever-growing fan base.
